LAUGHLIN – Laughlin’s new Town Manager, Brian Paulson, will join with Clark County’s new Economic Development Liaison, Philip Klevorick, as the next Laughlin Leadership Forum program. The public is invited, and admission will be free with refreshments to be served.

The sponsoring Laughlin Economic Development Corporation speakers program will start at 5 P.M. on Thursday, July 21, at the Richard Springston American Legion Post 60 at 1510 Bruce Woodbury Drive, a half-mile east (downhill) of the Needles Highway.

Both men have extensive economic development and growth backgrounds along with decades of experience in the Clark County government. They are part of a new push by District A Commissioner Steve Sisolak to bring more businesses, industries, and residents into the county’s southern-most township.

“The recent changes in personnel point to an increased intensity by county officials, led by our commissioner, in the campaign for Laughlin to add industry and a larger commercial sector to its current economic bases of the hospitality industry and better-off financially retirees,” explained LEDC  President Jim Maniaci.  He added, “Dr. Paulson has bought a place to live in Laughlin and has been busy meeting residents as he adds to his knowledge of the community. While being in charge of the county’s Community Development Block Grant program for many years, he was deeply involved in the construction of the Spirit Mountain Activity Center in our beautiful Mountain View Park.”  He began his work in Laughlin on June 6. An Iowa native, he received his Bachelor of Arts in journalism and political science, and his Master of Public Administration from Iowa State University in Ames, and his Doctor of Philosophy from the University of LaVerne in southern California.  He immediately went to work in 1989 as a charter employee of the County Manager’s Office’s management intern program, a 12-month position that resulted in him being hired as a full-time employee. He worked for 26 years in the County Manager’s Office and the Comprehensive Planning Department’s Community Resources Management Division. His responsibilities included Community Development Block Grants and fair housing programs.

Klevorick was born and raised in Newfoundland, Canada – a very rural and small community-based province in the eastern-most part of America’s northern neighbor. The province (state) has tremendous resources and recreational opportunities, but also is economically challenged.  Hired in May as the Clark County Economic Development Liaison, Klevorick has been the program manager for the Clark County Department of Comprehensive Planning Nuclear Waste Division, primarily in a regulatory oversight capacity of the Yucca Mountain Nuclear Depository proposed project. He also worked in Department of Air Quality and Environmental Management as a Permitting Specialist-Enforcement Officer. Klevorick has been the Clark County liaison for the Nevada National Test Site Specific Advisory Board, since 2009.  Prior to joining Clark County in 1999, he was a police constable in the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, a federal warden with the U.S. National Parks Service, an environmental specialist dealing with hazardous emergency response and cleanup for a provincial government, and a ranger with U.S. Bureau of Land Management.

Klevorick has a Master’s in Public Administration from the University of Nevada-Las Vegas and undergraduate degrees in business administration, forestry, and wildlife management.  He has played rugby for both Canadian and American clubs and in foreign competitions. He has coached men’s and women’s rugby clubs in Las Vegas, elevating competition to national levels in Division II rugby. And he coached the UNLV rugby club for 2 years. He became a referee in 2004 after a severe motorcycle accident. After becoming one of the top referees in the region he now focuses on the development of rugby referees. He was elected president of the regional referee society more than two years ago and plans to continue in this capacity for several more years.  Klevorick is married with four children. His Labrador Rolexx is his trusted companion when he is quadding, hiking, or exploring abandoned mines in the southern Nevada region.

The LEDC’s Laughlin Leadership Forum speakers program, organized by Bob Bilbray, assisted by LEDC Board Member Gina Mackey, brings top-notch government, political, and business leaders for Laughlin residents to meet face-to-face.
